Limburg is the Netherlands with a foreign touch, and it’s known for its geniality and the good life. On a terrace in the sun, with a beer or with a cup of coffee and a fresh slice of Limburg pie. Or enjoying one of Limburg’s culinary specialties, such as the asparagus.
Limburg has a rich history. The city Maastricht for instance, has hundreds of old buildings and ancient fortifications. In Sittard, Roermond, Weert, Venlo and in the white town Thorn, there are many other beautiful monuments and sights, including a number of impressive churches, chapels and beautiful castles in the area. And in Zuid-Limburg, there are the mile long mergel caves and ingenious defences.
You can discover more about the culture of Limburg in one of the many museums or during, for instance, a so called ‘schuttersfeest’. Carnaval (Vastelaovend in Limburg) is celebrated extensively in Limburg. However, there are also many modern cultural festivals and fun events that are certainly worth visiting.
There’s also a lot to do in sports in Limburg. From white-water kayaking to horse riding, from skiing to carts, from hot air balloon trips to gold. There are all kinds of activities for water sports lovers in and around the Maasplassen in Midden-Limburg and the hills of Zuid-Limburg provide challenging mountain bike routes. Naturally, for the kids there’s plenty of fun, from playgrounds to theme parks.
A day out to one of the many attractions, enjoying the peace and nature in one of the three national parks, a theatre of museum visit, in Limburg, it’s all possible! |
